Yeah the Yanks have certain rules about front bumper height and impact absorbtion. The MGB's rubber bumpers were indeed added to the car for the American market, and the same treatment was given to many other European cars of the time as well which inevitably compromised their looks.

I always thought the ride height was governed by the US regulations - if you
look at, for instance, a 1970's Lamborghini Countach in USA spec, it has
ridiculous front bumpers to comply with the USA regulations of the time. I
think that is also why the MGB had to have those horrible rubber bumpers??
Can anyone on the list confirm this?

Chris,
Can you ask your contact if he knows anything about the "factory ride
height"
versus the "engineered ride height" of our cars?
In the past we have heard about the supposed 'bumper height requirement' for
the
United States that didn't happen, or the 'headlight height requirement'. And
recently there was mention that Lotus purposely botched up the handling of
the
DeLorean so it wouldn't be as good as the Esprit of that time. But there
seems to
be no physical recorded evidence that proves the height of the front end
should
be lower than what came out of the factory.
I know Marc Levy, Robert Rooney & I would be appreciative.
