If the cambelt has just been fitted it may be a tooth out. Re-check the cam belt.
If the system is a mechanical fuel pump and its a turbo model, then pull the pipe off the timing advance boost capsule on top of the pump (Bosch VE type?). If this has diesel in it then the capsule is broken and needs replacing. ( approx £70). It could be something as simple as the stop solenoid on the pump.
Get a diesel specialist to look at the pump because standard 'nuts n bolts' garages will just replace the whole lot. Timing a pump is easy if you have a dial gauge and extender to shove in the pump but unless you have done it before its not worth the risk.
I've got an old M reg Astra Diesel on 138,000 miles now and still use it for business use at £0.40 / mile. Makes a tidy profit that runs 3 cars...
Good luck,

Hi All,
slightly off D topic... unfortunate mine had to go to Daniel to help towards
the cost of my loft conversion but confident I will get another at some
point somehow. At least The Colonel has gone to a good home. Might also
have to sort something out about Delorean-Hire.co.uk too.
Unfortunately i'm now car less as my Ford Focus mileage was getting high so
I decided to go for a full service, cam belt, brakes all round etc and hang
on to her - 2 days later it broke down and seems now financially not worth
fixing as my mechanic thinks it's the Diesel Pump approx £650+vat, +fitting,
+ going into fords after etc etc, estimate cost of repairs £1200! on top of
the service costs i've yet to be billed for!
What do you think - ebay it as a fixer upper? Just too good to scrap being
a 200 LXTD with Air Con etc.
