Re: [doc] Angle drive hell

The problem with the angle drive is that it uses screw gears. I really can't understand why! Screw gears are gears with 45 degree teeth that mesh at 90 degrees to one another. They rely an a well lubricated surface with no contamination. Let's face it folks, this is not a good environment for screw gears!!!

Richard (dickyh11), your task, should you choose to accept it, is to get Andy to machine up a replacement angle drive using a pair of 1:1 bevel gears. I know where to get the gears really cheap.

If we were to invest in getting angle drives made using bevels, we would be able to guarantee them for life, but they would have a slight problem of the cable mounting to them about 1/2" lower down. This would be a problem for the early style plastic retaining clips.

Would anyone be interested?

PS Lex has a hardcore Grady setup. Which he doesn't sell anymore - defeating the object of them being servicable!

My Dad and I also knackered a really nice 2-foot breaker bar, invented some new swear-words and lost a few pounds of sweat trying to undo the angle drive nut on VIN #4400 a while back. In the end it had to be sorted at a local garage which has experience in dealing with DeLoreans.

The general consensus seems to be that it's a pain of a job, but very satisfying once completed. I was lucky enough to find a PJ Grady "hardcore" angle drive with strong stainless components for a bargain on eBay about a year ago. A year on, this piece of kit has been faultless...might be the way to go to avoid having to pull the angle drive nut off again in the future?
