Mark,
I would say the ideas a good one. Even stranger, I was thinking
about it myself too! The issue would be the effect salt water has upon the
silver tooling steel that the dies will probably be made of.
Tooling steel is a hardened version of standard steel and as with any
ferrous metal, any prolonged contact with salt water begins a corrosion
within it. The danger with a hardened piece of steel is that it becomes
brittle and should the die be used, could break or shatter (Believe me, when
press dies shatter you don't want to be anywhere near them). That said, for
low usage the dies could maybe be used as a template for a "soft steel" die
that could be manufactured at a much reduced cost. There would be no
definite way of telling their state until the tooling is up, dry and
inspected to see if it is safe to use. Even then, micro fractures are almost
impossible to detect.
If you (or anyone) wants to acquire the tooling, I'm sure I can
spare a couple of press brakes to play with!
Simon

HI
First time I posted on here so I hope I am doing it right.
These body presses, strange I was just thinking about them in the past few
days....
Now I am new to the DeLorean scene so please excuse any stupidity. I am
getting very interested in DeLoreans and have seen the DeLorean company web
site in the USA. Do they know about these dies? I personnaly think I would
be a great idea to salvage them and run off some panels, perhaps a kit car
version could be produced or is it all pie in the sky stuff?
Cheers
Mark
