By 'loose' do you mean the pedal had collapsed to the floor, or that you
could press it down, and it returned, but just did nothing?

Have you lost any clutch fluid? The master or slave could be leaking
past the seals. Check around the pedal where the master comes through
the footwell, there's a recess where fluid will have collected if it's
leaking. Rebuilt kits are 15 quid from Martin, and a doddle to fit.
