I agree with Mike - don't bother. For the effort you'll go to plus the 
fact that the first chip will show up like a turd in a punchbowl, it 
simply is not worth it.
I cheat and use Halfords wet look tyre dressing. Lasts for months and is 
only £2.99 a bottle, and stops surfact rust on shiny new engine bits :-)
I've rolled my eyes at many cars with painted engine bays and especially 
under the bonnet because it flakes off so easily and looks a lot worse 
like that than just "slightly grey".
