Nicks right.
I take it you've had to format your drive because of virus's and spyware?
The majority of virus's and spyware ridden machines that we repair on a daily basis, usually have these major flaws:
1. Pirate or Illegal corporate copies of Windows XP. (Without Microsofts updates and patchs, you WILL be VERY suseptable to viri and spyware. These updates are inperative and have been soley made to help with new security issues that occur on a frequent basis.)
2.Rubbish Anti-Virus Software. Now I know I'll get slated here, but trust me, this is from LOTS of experience. Norton Anti-Virus, and McAfee anti-virus are two of THE WORST anti-virus software bundles you can ever put on your machine. The algorithmic engines each of these programs use, are useless. If you run this software, I suggest you head off to www.grisoft.com and install their "AVG FREE EDITION" anti virus software. If you are running Pirate XP and Norton, I Guarantee AVG FREE EDITION will find virus's on your machine. There are approx 500-600 new virus's released onto the net EVERY DAY ! Nuff Said.
3. AOL. Or AO-HELL as its known in the business. Many of you will say, AOL is great ! No doubt, but when you've had as many PC's to repair (Software) because of AOHELL as I have, then you'd see things differently. Try not to use them if possible (My Personal Opinion).
4. Firewall software. Most people dont bother with this stuff, but yet again, its soooooo important to use it. WinXP has a pretty decent Firewall for the most part, for the average user (So long as you have windows service pack 2 installed). There is better firewall software out there such as zone alarms, but most users dont understand how to use it properly. Its usually worth the extra few quid to buy a hardware firewall instead, or a Modem Router which has a built-in firewall.
5. P2P (Peer to Peer) software. No amount of anti-virus software, Firewall, spyware software or windows updates will help you here. If you use "Bear Share" , "Lime Wire" , "WinMX" , "Kazaa" etc etc..., and other file sharing clients, you WILL get virus's and spyware. Even if you are not actively downloading anything. What you are doing (In Effect) is making a direct connection to everyone eles's PC who is running the same software. Someone along the line is going to have a virus, and the main aim of most well written virus's is to copy itself by any means possible. Via the net, discs, memory sticks, wireless and non-wireless networks, you name it.
Most people dont even realise that they still have Limewire or other programs "Running in the background" whilst they're traulling the net, spreading the virus and indeed catching more themselves.
6.Anti-Spyware software. Webroot's SpySweeper is undoubtedly the best stuff we have come across. Beats Adaware, spybot S+D, etc "Hands down".
7.DONT use these crappy programs like "Registry cleaner" "Reg Sweep" and the likes, if you dont know what the registry is, leave it alone. You can do serious damage to the Operating System using these programs. Unless you know what information they're deleting.
**TIP:
**But Legit Windows ALWAYS.
**Buy AVG Anti-Virus / Kaspersky Anti Virus / Panda Anti-Virus.
**Make sure you have your firewall enabled.
**Get ALL your windows updates.
**Kepp off Peer 2 Peer Software
**Keep off cracks, serial sites.
**Try using a safer web-browser like firefox etc.
Yep, all that seems harsh. But thats the internet for you.
Im telling it how it is.
