Hi Phil,

ouch - I know the feeling well - my compressor died just after a re-
gas, and no, you can't replace the unit without loosing the gas. If 
its still got R12 in its supposed to be removed, if its got the 
modern replacement isceon 49 then it can be released ok.

One of the con rods on a piston in my compressor snapped, I stripped 
it to find out what happened - here's the result of it -

I got a new compressor, complete with the accumulator (dryer) from 
Carcoon - the price was £130 plus £15.00 post next day delivery - 
that is the exact price that DMC in Houston are charging + post, they 
didn't even add any extra for duty and usa-uk shipping they would 
have paid (DMC price is $195). 
The dryer is a bit of a pig to change (you need some huge spanners) 
and the one I got was the one with both pipes at the top side, not 
the early type like Rich H has with one pipe going in the bottom.
Order a new belt as well! its a pain getting one that fits from the 
car parts shops.

If you were standing at the back of my car looking into the engine 
bay, you can see that the round part on the compressor which engages 
seems to get stuck or seize. Does this mean that the bearing has 
seized? If so, what would be the next step in sorting this out? And 
furthermore, can I do it without losing all my refridgerant gas??
