RE: [doc] Fuel Pickup Pipe Replacement LONG!

You don't need to drain the fuel if you don't mind sploshing about in
it, but the less in there the better.

Disconnect battery
Remove boot carpet
Remove spare wheel
Remove screws holding access plate on
Remove access plate
Unplug fuel pump (two pin connector)
Loosen & remove big jubilee clip around fuel pump cover
Remove pump cover and slide it down pipes a few inches
Get your fingers under the lip of the fuel pump boot and prise it up

Lift fuel pump boot (which has the fuel pump fixed in it) up VERY
carefully until you can just see the jubilee clip at the bottom of the
pump, this clip holds the pick up pipe onto the bottom of the pump. If
you pull it up too hard you risk wrenching the stud out of the tank that
holds the baffle in place.

Allow the pipe to plop back into the tank. Pull the fuel pump clear of
the tank (there is a return hose attached, but it's loose and doesn't
connect anywhere in the tank). Put the pump to one side, it will still
be connected to the fuel lines, so try and avoid tugging or kinking
them.

Look down through the hole where the pump used to be and you'll see a
nut at the bottom of the tank. This nut holds the baffle in place (the
baffle looks like an upturned saucepan).

Unscrew the nut & pray.

The nut is tightened onto a stud which is melted into the plastic at
manufacture, if the nut is seized or the stud wasn't very well attached
it will come adrift. Then you will have nothing left to attach the
baffle to, which leaves you the option of draining and drying the tank
and aralditing it back in place or buying a new tank off Chrispy, or
getting the replacement kit from SpecialT Auto which removes the need
for the baffle completely.

The nut holds a springy wire onto the plastic baffle. Remove the springy
wire, then the baffle. You have to squeeze it to get it through the
hole.

The fuel pick up pipe passes through a hole in the side of the baffle
turns through 90 degrees and affixes to the pick up filter (you might
want to renew that while you're at it)

Once it out it's pretty obvious how to replace the pick up pipe.

Reassembly is the reversal of removal (as they say in Haynes manuals)

Bear in mind:
The baffle sits between two bumps in the tank, if you put your hand on
the bottom of the tank you'll feel them.
Put the springy bit over the baffle first then push the whole lot back
into the tank and locate over the stud, check the springy bit is still
over the baffle.
When tightening the nut, be VERY careful not to over tighten (for the
above mentioned reasons) hand tight and then a bit more is enough.
Be careful when reattaching the pick up hose to the bottom of the pump
not to tug it - the new tube will be stiffer then the old one and at
greater risk of yanking the stud out!
Make sure when you tighten the jubilee clip on the bottom of the pump so
that you have the pipes at the top pointing to the rear of the car,
otherwise you'll crush the pipes when refitting the access panel.
Don't twist the pump as you refit it as this will twist the pick up
pipe, putting you back at square one.

Hope this helps
