Re: [DML] Coating a frame... what to choose?

The zinc chromate was applied at a plating company.  As I recall, the downside was that it was line of sight to the source and as such does not get inside well.

Since zinc chromate is highly toxic, carcinogenic, and highly restricted, I'm figuring POR 15 is now the coating of choice for primer?

What I did:
- Zinc Chromate the frame where the epoxy was removed.
- Then a zinc rich powdercoat primer was used
- Topcoated with powdercoat of finish quality & color.

Since the trailing arms were sooooo bad I got new ones, hot dipped zinc and powdercoat for color match.  The zinc does get everywhere and needs to be removed where bolts are used (such as the trailing arm holes).

This was done many years ago (25'ish) and before DMC support via the internet was as good as today.

Not exactly what you asked, but  FYI...

Hello everyone!
Here I come with another very technical question. What is the preferred method of coating a frame? Here are the choices I have and I don’t know what to do.
I would like to have the frame zinc coated but then I was asked how I want it done. It can be dipped in a molten zinc giving a thick and strong layer. Another way is electro plating the zinc onto the frame.
Pro:
Hot dip – thick layer, good protection, gets into all little nooks and crannies.
Electro plating – Thin layer doesn’t affect bolt threads, adds very little weight

Cons:
Hot dip – thick layer, increases the weight of frame, a lot will remain in all enclosed spaces
Electro plating – doesn’t last as long, doesn’t coat inside enclosed spaces

Zinc coating is fairly inexpensive and I’d like to do it. I can also have the frame powder coated to increase the protection even further. What do you guys think? Should I go with the dip process or electro plating? I was thinking about electro plating + powder coating.

I’d appreciate any input. Thanks.
