I don't know what Matt has but if it's the new Chinese pump system from DMCH
with the special pump then you will spend $400.00 for the all in one unit
made in China and then probably another $150.00 for the special pump that
goes in it. 
Then you will spend hours on the road trying to take it apart and replace
the pump. Good luck. I could have done this years ago but having the
component to replace instead of the complete unit isn't so good.

Hopefully he has something different.

Couldn't he just carry a spare fuel pump?  Did he convert to EFI or a
carb?

I was going through fuel pumps on my car (my car is carbureted) but I later
found out this was due to electrical problems in my car.  I had the wrong
bulb in the battery indicator lamp which caused my power to sometimes
fluctuate.

Who would have ever thought such a small and cheap part could cause so many
problems.  I honestly believe vendors should include a #162 bulb with every
alternator they sell and insist that their customer's pull the binnacle to
check and replace the bulb if needed.
