The OEM starter seems to be a pretty rugged and long-lived piece. What really kills them IMHO is if the car was neglected/abused and to get it going someone cranked the life out of it. Most of the time they simply wear out. The brushes have a finite life and when they are worn too much the starter won't work. That is a function of how many hours and the # of starts. The other thing that kills starters is getting flooded or being run on a low battery. Low voltage causes higher amperage and that causes heat and wears the brushes out faster.
