Steve, The condition described is common as temperature increases. In the clutch linkage there is a "U" shape part about four inches long that can be removed and lengthened exactly 1/4" in the center to prevent resistance in shifting into first or second gear. Remove the linkage, measure the length between the pivot pin holes center lines, saw the part in half, pin the pivot holes with screws in a block of wood such that the length between the two pivot pin holes is exactly 1/4" longer then the original length. Space at the center cut is exactly 1/4"(no more). Insert a 1/8" X 1/2" X 1/2" steel spacer inside the "U" shaped part that will provide 1/8" overlap. Weld the overlap ends on the outside of the part. Note, an oversize spacer will interfere with shifting.
