"Mild steel" = "low carbon steel." Much lower strength. Think of the difference between a Grade 2 fastener and a Grade 8 fastener.

The reason DeLorean frames rust so badly is because they are made of low carbon steel. High carbon steel (like what train track rails are made of) does not even need external protection. Ladder frames, like a pickup truck's, are made from high carbon steel (F-150 owners do not paint their frames. They also drive their trucks through any kind of weather).

High carbon steel is difficult to stamp and form. That is why decorative parts like fenders and door skins are made from mild steel. 

DeLorean frames are made from the same metal as a fender (same thickness too). They look big, but they hollow inside, like a heating duct. Combined with inherent limitations of the central spine design (see Motor Trend December 1981), they are an altogether arguably weak design.

Even my lowly AMC was driven through many road salt winters while it lived in DC, and you see how well it survived (AMC was using 100% galvanized sheet metal at that time. All AMC's are unit body, not body on frame).
