Marc is absolutely correct. And, the engineering is amazingly effective. A few years ago a member of my family was involved in a serious accident in which our late-model Volvo ended up crashing head-on into a guard rail. The result was a sight to behold. The front end of the vehicle was a nightmare of crumpled metal and shattered plastic. Repair costs were into 5 figures. The driver, on the other hand, walked away without a scratch. No hint of damage made it as far as the passenger compartment. Not even an airbag deployment.
We considered this a very good outcome.

What would be more fair is to compare collisions of both vehicles with some other object- like a city bus for example. I think I am more likely to live to tell my story about hitting a city bus head on in a car made in the last 10 yrs versus one from 40 yrs ago.
