The gap will have a big effect on the current draw. Checking the gap should be the first thing you do. You can also do a continuity test on the coil. Once you know the gap is good and you have continuity THEN you can do a current draw. When checking the gap it should be very close to even all around. You may have to bend the plate a little to even things up.
