Thanks for the info but the aircon is completely depressurised at the moment (has been for the last year).  I have the dryer to change and a leaky compressor valve to change before it can be regassed.

Chris,

Have you checked your AC? If the compressor is not running, you may be out of freon. If that is the case, your smoking vents is where your freon escaped into the atmosphere.
