I'd like to put my 2 cents in on this.

Another cause for there not being enough heat is related to what you 
found.  If you have failing head gaskets and air(exhaust) is escaping 
into the coolant system the first item to fail would be the heater 
core.  If the leak gets worse, the exhaust gases will cause a large 
bubble and no coolant will flow then the engine will overheat.

I'm not saying thats your cause, but I would keep a keen eye on that.  
One clue is if you find yourself always bleeding the coolant system to 
get a decent amount of heat.
