This used to happen to me all of the time and for me was my alternator. A way to tell is to look at your volt gauge when the noise is happening (will read lower) and then again after the sound stops (gauge will read normal voltage). Or if you have your fan on it will sound sluggish when it's happening (lack of voltage) and sound normal when it's not.
