You can use WD-40 in a pinch, but it is not a good replacement. Most contact cleaners are degreasers, and WD-40 will remove grease to some extent. The difference is, contact cleaners are made to not leave a residue when they evaporate. WD-40, while not a great long-term lubricant, leaves a residue, which attracts dirt.
