Actually, even better (in my book) would be an updated door lock module that would not only provide this lock-safe functionality, but would "remember" to close the locks once the doors were closed. For an even cooler upgrade, replace the door buzzer with a more modern-sounding unit and tie it in to this module too, so that if you press the lock buttons when the doors are up, it "bings" to confirm.
I think most modern cars with central locking are set up this way - press the lock buttons on the remote and it waits until the doors are closed.
The only thing that I can find wrong with this idea is that the door lock buttons physically move the lock rods, but as long as we're talking about modifying wiring, I don't think that it would be too hard to convert from a mechanical setup to a purely electrical one.
I know the new digital lock modules are supposed to have "enough computing power to run the entire car", so maybe this isn't such a far-fetched idea after all. Maybe someday this will be Wings-A-Loft 2.0?
