You should probably do a search of the list and find all the other discussions about oil. Everyone has their opinion. Same thing goes for filters.
I use 5w-40 synthetic (Valvoline). If I were to use conventional oil I would use a 10w-40 (major brand). I'm looking for cold engine oil flow with high temp protection. In my experience - conventional oils "thin-out" sooner than synthetic oils. I would be afraid to run 20w-50 in any climate where the temp goes below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Phoenix for example would probably be a candidate for the 20w-50.
Synthetic is better than conventional oil - that's a given these days but, the blends are probably as good a protection as you need if you do reasonable maintenance. My use of synthetic is probably over-kill. However, in the auto trans, synthetic is probably a necessity - a blend at the very least should be used.
