Which raises the question, why 8:9? Did they get a great deal on
discount speedometers?

Convetion dictates probably clockwise.... which is the direction a left
wheel rotates, as viewed from the inside. This would also work with
bevel gears, but this can't be done on the DeLorean because of the
requirement to have an 8:9 ratio in a single stage, hence the use of
screw gears etc etc etc.
