I haven't had the chance to read all the responses but I am responding to the title.
I once towed my 81 automatic on a tow dolly with my Ford Taurus.
I had to tow the DeLorean backwards because it is an automatic.
The front had been damaged so the hood, fascia and fenders were removed
and this allowed more clearance.
I need to take it from Fort Worth to Houston and back for repairs.
Towing it backwards destroyed my angle drive and it's never been repaired since.
This was also too much weight for my Taurus and it overheated my transmission,
it caused it to boil up and smoke! I pulled over and let it cool for an hour and then
resumed at a much slower speed of 45-55 max.
All in all it did work, but I don't reccomend it.
If you can put it on a flat bed trailer that is your BEST bet.
Even if it means overloading your tow vehicle and driving in a low gear
at a slow speed. The money you try to save will cost you much more in the end!!!

All,While there are limitations for tow dolly towing on sometollways, a trailer does not make the transport perfect.I highly recommend you check your route before using a cartrailer as well, since there are limitations with trailers,especially for certain bridges and tunnels around the NYarea (mostly bridge and tunnel restrictions for trailers).While many of the trailer limitations are tied to the useof trucks (for towing), it can also be a problem when thetow vehicle is an SUV or a full-size car.
