Hey Kev,
Glad you made it home. Well, it COULD be your pump. However, it
may have just gotten hot. One way to tell is to stop off and fill up
(if you are, say, less than half a tank) and see if the colder fuel
quiets your pump. I'd be more inclined to check your pick-up hose,
though. I get the feeling it may be a little squishy and it was
starting to collapse in on itself during your ride home.
As for lifespan, I've had the Bosch pump from Rob in my car since
2002 and it has been driven to Memphis, Chicago, and ever summer in
110+ degree days and it was just starting to make the same noise last
summer, so I think your pump would be safe. When was the last time
you changed your fuel filter?
