I did ask a mechanical engineer friend, and he did say that these types of gears ARE directional.. And he agreed that if the angle drives in our DeLoreans were "borrowed" from a design where it has been flipped over, it would have a higher failure rate. Maybe if I have some time, I will see if I can find my old one to take apart and have him inspect. --- Martin Gutkowski <martin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > They are called SCREW GEARS > > http://pdf.directindustry.com/pdf/khk/screw-gears-catalogue/18644-19117-_2.html > > > content22207 wrote: > > > > I'm no physics major, so here's a question for > those who are: > > > > If you have two gears with teeth that intermesh at > an angle, like a > > letter V, is it easier to rotate towards the point > at the bottom or > > away towards the ends? > > > > I've been playing with my angle drive, and it sure > seems easier to > > turn backwards than forwards.
