The mechanical systems have served us well for many years. They are
for the most part fairly rugged. The electrical system in a Delorean
has it's own problems, I don't think adding to them is the answer.
Since many Deloreans are still running with their origional angle
drives they can't be the source of the problem. IMHO the causes for
the failures of the speedometer system are the following:
Problems with the dust cover aka drive disc. The square hole rounds
out or the cap slips between the rim and the spindle.
Failure to regularly lubricate the angle drive
A too long lower speedometer cable
Broken or missing lower cable support bracket
Parts getting jammed in the speedometer head damaging other parts in
the system such as the angle drive, dust cover, and inner speedometer
cables.
At this time IMHO the failures of angle drives is not a CAUSE but a
result of other causes (unless it dies from a lack of lubrication). I
am sure Darryl or Rob could comment more on this since they see more
failures than any of us do. In the meantime if you value your angle
drive then you should make very sure it is well lubricated. If your
car has killed more than one you should pull the speedometer head and
inspect it for any loose parts inside. Keeping that little RPM-MPH
card is smart insurance if you should lose your speedometer while driving.
