Putting the selector in drive or reverse requires activating the
solenoids.
This action asks a lot from the juice box ref: the door solenoids also
taking a lot energy).
So IMHO this may contribute to cause the behaviors you observe.
I gladly swap my opinion for the one of e.g. David Teitelbaum.
