[DML] the alternator

hello.  sorry to keep perpetuating the battery/alternator discussion.  
just having a problem.  i just put in a new battery.  now i notice that 
whenever i put the car in reverse or drive, at times the rpms drop and 
then go up and the battery light comes on.  as soon as i start driving 
it's fine and the light goes off.  i'm sure i need a new alternator.  
but just wanted to check and see if any of you think it's a different 
problem causing this.  sorry if this is stupid, but does putting the 
car in drive or reverse put more strain on the alternator, and will 
getting a new one fix the problem?  in park or while driving it's 
fine.  thanks for any help you can offer.  ryan the newb out. vin3932
