Hi Chris, When replacing the axle lip seals, be VERY CAREFUL to avoid scratching or gouging the transmission casing which the seal is fitted into during removal. Doing so will require a lot of careful work to repair it or else it will leak worse than it did from the beginning!! To ensure a leak-free axle, you should get the seals from Grady, clean the casing really well, use anerobic sealant on the seal, and be sure to hit it in straight with a pipe or something. You have to hit it in from the outside edge, or else you will bend the inner lips which have metal reinforcement. You will have to go slowly and carefully or else it will probably go in sideways. Also, it is wise to trade your axle yokes in to Grady to get his rebuilt and sleeved yokes. A little spendy but most everyone says it is worth it. There are o-rings on the shafts coming out of the transmission. Those get shredded up over time. Make sure you get those from a DMC vendor too. Might as well replace them while you are in there! There is also a seal of some type in the front of the tranny where the linkage goes in, but from what I hear, it is not worth replacing unless it is leaking badly already. I didn't replace mine, the only penalty is a tiny bit of oil hanging from the first linkage rod from time to time. No big deal. I replaced the fill and drain plug while I had my transmission out too. That's about it! Might as well degrease it and paint it while you are at it. Good luck - Andy In a message dated 4/24/2007 6:48:29 P.M. Any suggestions on anything else that should be replaced or worked on whilst the clutch/gearbox are out of the car?
