Bob, If I understand you correctly. You have to turn the key several times
before it connects to turn the starter over. 
I have had this before and turned out to be a dirty switch.

Hi Group,

I'm calling out for help re: an occasional problem that has just 
started on my D.  More often now than when the weather was warmer, but 
I will turn the ignition key and the motor wont turn over.  All other 
electrical is fine.  I changed the battery and connections ar tight. 
I turn the key about 10 times in a row and then it starts right up as 
normal.

Has anyone experienced this in the past and could give me a hint of 
where to start?
