John - I would recommend installing a battery cutoff switch. You can
power the Lojack around the switch, but a cutoff switch would
eliminate all other current drains. You must realize that the
alternator is really a battery maintenance device, and not a battery
charging device. When you start the engine periodically, you drain
some of the power just in starting. The engine would have to run for
quite a while to make up for that drain, plus the longer term drain
from the Lojack and other devices in the car that drain power. We
have a very slick battery cutoff switch that is either remotely
controlled via Wings-A-Loft, or can be controlled via a small hidden
toggle switch. The main switch itself is completely invisible when
installed, and consumes no power in either the open or closed
position.
In regards to the type of battery to get, a deep cycle battery might
work better for you. These are typically not ideal for automotive
uses, but they can tolerate big drain and recharge cycles better than
a normal battery. Also, gel batteries are better (IMHO) than a
typical lead-acid battery (think Optima Yellow Top or similar).
