I've long thought the same thing. In the automotive world, there are
not many rear-drive configurations to choose from without making your
own transaxle, something that DMC was not big enough to do. Porsche
would have been hideously expensive, VW was not heavy-enough duty,
and the GM (Corvair) was long out of production at that point in
time. That's about all the mass-production rear drives to choose
from.
In contrast, Fiero is technically mid-engine (used a front-drive
setup just moved to the back, not turned around) as are the Toyota
and Honda mid-engine cars, as is the ZF trans used in the Pantera.
I believe DMC engineers picked the transaxle first and then went for
the only V6 engine that fit it.
