It is very possible to make a limited # of panels. You create a wooden
"buck" to beat them against. It doesn't last very long but is a method
for producing a small quantity. It would still be very expensive
because it is all hand labor and it would take a lot of time. Chris
Nicklson has a pictorial of his creating a fender from a sheet of S/S.
Because of the immense amount of labor required it makes more sense to
repair even a severly damaged panel before having to consider making
one from "scratch". Since you can still find used but serviceable
panels for a whole lot less than what it would cost to make one (or
even repair a severly damaged one) it makes no sense to make "new"
ones. Price them up on E-Bay or call the vendors and then compare that
to what it would take to make the panel. A 4' X 8" sheet of 16 GA S/S
is near $200 before you even start to make it into a part! Panels are
not that big a problem, other parts are. For instance, the headlight
switch. I know of a local owner that just bought a driver's side door
for less than $6. The shipping was the big thing but the door is PERFECT.
