My guess about why the mesh is breaking is probably from fatigue. There does not appear to be any corrosion or accident damage. If you have a really bad vibration from bad tires or a bent rim you would induce a lot of vibration and maybe that is the cause. Another possability is if someone pulled down really hard on the steering wheel it can cause it to break at the weak points. I consider this a design defect. It is not supposed to break like this. The mesh was made so it could collapse, not break. I see no problem with a proper weld repair. It should have no effect on the collapsabilty of the mesh. The main thing is that it requires removal and disassembly to properly weld and paint. Liability is a whole other issue. If liability is that big a problem how can anyone repair anything. Besides, I never had anyone come back complaining about their parachute not opening (if you know what I mean)! A repaired column has to be safer than a broken one! BTW since you have to remove it to repair it you will probably be replacing the bushing. If you watch the video that was shown to the Dealers the Delorean was supposed to allow the occupants to survive a 40 MPH head-on collision with a wall and be able to walk away. At least that is what was intended. So was the plastic body and frame.
