Not sure what you mean by the support rod or the spring. I had the same problem. The catch is adjustable. Play with the adjustment until you have to push down and flex the cover a tiny bit in order to close and lock it... this flex provides some spring to pop the cover back up when you pull the handle. At least it worked out well on my car. Not sure how long it will last... i.e., maybe the cover will assume a new shape and not spring again after awhile. Another option I've seen someone use is to thread a cord or some other kind of handle through some of the vent openings in the cover so it can be lifted with your right hand while you operate the latch with your left.
