Bruce, I did not have the problem you are describing when I installed my Digital Dash. I set everything up to work off the angle drive, including my electronic cruise control. The odometer works like a champ. Granted, this was not an existing setup from a production vehicle, it was aftermarket. However, these options are out there for everyone.
