Do the courtesy lights work? If not, check the #12 fuse
or (if you have one) whether the Battery Saver 
(by DMC Joe) is switched off.
Lack of +12V on the lights system, either by switch or
blown fuse can cause the dash-light to come on due
to a sort of feedback loop.
This has to do with the fact that the dash-light is on a 
different fuse circuit.

I'm not 100% sure this will be it, but it IS the most 
logical and common occurence of this problem.
