temp gauge wiring

Hey all,

in theory, if i were to have wiring problems in the engine compartment for my 
temperature gauge, and i were to connect an extra piece of wire from the temp 
sending unit to the 4-spade harness underneath the steering column where the 
wire goes into the dash, would that work? or are there any other components 
in the system that would be dangerously by-passed?
