Paul - The box you have found is the lambda counter. This counter
represents percent of 30,000 miles. When the percentage reaches
100, the counter turns on the lambda light on the dash indicating
that the oxygen sensor should be replaced. The reason the wires
are clipped is because your previous owner didn't know about or
didn't know how to reset the counter.

Subject: [DML] Speedo
Hi all
Whilst moving on with the restoration of my car. the speedo comes next,
Instead of a straight cable to the wheels , half way is yellow/White box
showing % of life used on a counter. What exactly is it and is it really
needed as the wires leading out are snapped and will take some real work to
fix ( I Can do this though).
