Speedo

Hi all

Whilst moving on with the restoration of my car. the speedo comes next, Instead of a straight cable to the wheels , half way is yellow/White box showing % of life used on a counter. What exactly is it and is it really needed as the wires leading out are snapped and will take some real work to fix ( I Can do this though).

The next thing is the speedo cable from hear to the wheel is totally missing. What part do I nedd ie part number would help
