You can get a same-day passport (renewal, I think), if you're willing to pay
a $100 fee (I think), and wait in line for 2-3hours at your nearest U.S.
Passport Office. I did it a few years back on an impromptu (really "last
minute") trip to Italy. There are also plenty of "passport services" on the
internet that will charge you for them to stand in line, but that just
increases the cost. Depending on timing, they might be able to do a one-day
turnaround.
