I agree. All he really had to do was hook up the R12 to the low pressure side of the compressor and put the can of R12 in a bowl of warm water. That would have raised the pressure enough (after a minute or two) to allow the compressor to come on. Jumping the low pressure switch is also a possibility but he should make sure there are no leaks somehow first otherwise he'll suck air (and moisture) into the system and spend the receiver dryer.
