Re: [DML] Re: Updated Service Manuals coming?

So how about this:

Lets each agree to each take a small part of the manual, transcribe the text as a Word file (or whatever) and scan the corresponding images. There are over a thousand of us, right? Even if only half of us sign up, it would be a relatively trivial amount of work for any one individual.

I propose that we:

(a) first recreate the existing manual as-is in machine-readable form.

(b) appoint an editor (or editors) from among the experts on the list and begin an ongoing project to correct and augment the manual, with the experts exerting editorial control.

(c) put the resulting machine-readable documents in the public domain (i.e., free for all). If somebody wants to try to make money by producing nice printed copies, CD ROMs, or hypertexts, great. But anybody could download the source files from the DML site for free.

All this would require a bit of organization, but it really doesn't sound like that much work, given the aggregate resources available on the list.

So what do you all say?
