Nick and whoever else might be wondering, The most likely explanation of this phenomenon is that when the DeLorean engine is shut off, the tach usually doesn't return to zero but rather freezes where it was last, or sometimes jumps a bit higher. When you crank the engine the tach returns to zero until the engine has started. Given that the electronics are made by Lucas may help to explain the needle jump. It also does other sorts of weird things, like when the battery power is low on mine, the tach needle will spin around violently. My Dad's is not connected properly and jumps around all the time. Who knows what other "indicators" Lucas thought they were putting in to help, but are generally just a hinderance! However, it is still the most reliable guage by which to judge your speed when your speedo cable and/or angle drive break.
