I had the same problem. The PO (prior owner) had attempted to hot glue
it back together. Unfortunately car interiors can get hotter than the
melting point of hot glue.
I had a friend that makes fishing lures out of stainless steel wire use
the same tools to bend me a new wire frame for the shift boot. I then
glued the leather around the wire frame. As part of the frame we formed
four tabs that grip under the metal console. It's been holding fine for
two years now.
I have also seen a steel frame custom-made as part of a replacement
boot offered by DeLorean Motor Center in LA. You might be able to buy
the frame separately.
