Dave, It is not necessary to remove the engine to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets. Purchase the Exhaust Manifold Service Kit which includes all of the items necessary to do a complete exhaust restoration job. Driving the car with the heat stove duct disconnected will not have any adverse effects. Be aware that the exhaust gasket replacement is not a shadetree project, replacing broken studs and resurfacing the manifolds are part of a successful job. Your local reliable import service facility should be able to handle the job.
