Rick-

I'm going to guess you mean by the protector plate the skidplate under the 
gas tank? If so, that's probably one of your 2 coolant lines. In my case, 
the rubber on them had dryrotted and was starting to leak. Pretty easy to 
fix, but I would go ahead and check all the lines first. Usually, when one 
starts, the rest are soon to come.
