I have even had the experience of a battery go completely dead overnight and would not take any charge at all. I am currently having a problem with my DeLorean where the battery will discharge rather rapidly, over several hours, but will hold enough charge to start after sitting for about half-hour or so, but not much longer. In this case a new battery is definitely in order. This will be my fourth battery since new, and only 9800 miles! It has been my experience that a frequently used battery will last much longer than a seldom used one, particularly if the seldom used battery is allowed to become completely or nearly discharged between uses. In a case where the battery is seldom used I would recommend a "marine" grade or "deep cycle" grade battery. They are supposed to withstand "complete discharges" better.
