[DML] trunk struts

I bought new trunk struts from one of the distributors recommended by this
list (on this list). With the new trunk struts does a person still have to
lift the trunk lid for the first two feet to get to started on its way up or
did I get a bad set of struts?

I'm getting the D ready for my wife to drive and I don't think she can pull
the trunk handle and lift the trunk lid at the same time.
